Summary
Contrary to popular belief, Sonic the Hedgehog is not a party person.
He’d say he’s justified, given his notably bad track record with them, but it’s not even that. Once the fun with friends fades… the crowd, the music, the dancing, the touch, the almost-dying, the everything, it tends to take more out of him than he takes out of it. He'll make an exception to his distaste for informal, small parties among just friends… which is decidedly not what he’s invited to. Who sends invitations with gold-trimmed paper?
…He can’t decline now, can he?
Sonic the Hedgehog does not like formality. But Sonic the Hedgehog is a good friend. Unfortunately, those are mutually exclusive right now. So for his good friends, he’ll endure one party, one occasion, one night. He ends up gaining some unexpected insight while he's there. Or in other words, has some sense knocked into him. Maybe it wasn’t the party he disliked.

Summary
Sonic the Hedgehog.
He goes by many names, takes on many roles. To those closest to him, he’s the best friend you could ask for. To those who challenge him, he’s a force to be reckoned with. To most of the world, he’s a hero, a legend to rival the days of old.
If you were to ask Sonic himself, he would say he’s no one special.
He’s wrong.
He knows he’s wrong. He knows he’s special in ways he doesn’t yet understand. It’s hard to ignore when the chaos emeralds thrum constantly in the back of his head, reminding him of the role he’s meant to fill. The role he rejects every time he borrows their power.
When the time comes, he will accept, because that’s just who he is. For now, he tries to live life like he always has, because there comes a day when he will no longer be able to ignore what lies ahead of him.
Tell him, how does he make the most of the moment when the moment lasts eternity?(AKA: The chaos emeralds claim Sonic as their guardian, essentially turning him into a god. Now, he has to deal with the implications of that— and immortality.)

The nightmare always starts the same.
The Tornado idling on a field, red metal gleaming in the sun, an excited Tails flying circles around one of the wings.
Last minute adjustments, he shouts.
Take your time, Sonic shouts back.
He is balancing on top of a low ledge, not even looking up. He hasn't looked up once ever since arriving here, ever since noticing the plane and the bags and hearing the engine purr relentlessly. Out of the corner of his eyes he can see his little brother zipping back and forth, can hear his excited chatter, low and muffled as if reaching him through glass. He concentrates on his shoes and on the thin ledge he is pacing on.
Up and down. Up and down.
I'm done, Tails calls.
Great, Sonic calls back.

After the events of Sonic Frontiers Tails has left for his own adventure and Sonic is happy for his little brother. Everything is fine. Great even.
Now if his mind would just stop playing tricks on him...
