It’s been a little over three weeks since he dumped Evan, and in hindsight Tommy could’ve handled the whole situation so much better. They never talked about their long term plans, goals and wishes, or set any specific ground rules for their relationship, but Tommy always assumed they were on the same page.
They were enjoying their time together, for however long it was going to last. Six weeks, six months, a year. But at some point Evan was going to get bored of him, or he’d outgrow Tommy and start looking for somebody else. Somebody with the qualities Evan wanted in a long term partner.

All Buck wanted was to be with his family, but things weren’t the same after the lawsuit. He was sidelined, buried in chores, still on the outs with the 118, especially Bobby and Eddie. Unwilling to give up on them, Buck kept his head down and did his job.
Until he died, all alone, while his team was out on a call.
Grief and guilt consume them. They should have been there, should have seen the signs— should have saved him. But Bobby had let his anger blind him, believing there’d be time to make things right. And Eddie had stayed silent, convinced there’d be a someday. Now, Buck is gone, and they can never make it right.
They weren’t the only ones Buck left behind, however. When a group of Navy SEALs arrives at Buck’s funeral, their presence brings more than just surprise. It brings truths the 118 never saw coming, and more grief than they ever could have imagined.

Hen scrapes green beans onto her plate without looking. A few fall to the floor, which distracts her from Karen’s initial tone and expression as she wrangles them into a napkin. “What calendar?”
“The firefighter calendar.”
“They do that every year.”
“Are you going to submit something?”
Hen has sort of a record-scratch moment. She definitely had not been considering subjecting herself to such misery. “The only people that buy those are middle-aged women and gay guys.” She laughs. “They’re not exactly flipping through those things looking for me.”

Karen doesn’t look away from the road, but this time for a whole new reason entirely. “The pedal is stuck.”
“The gas pedal?” Hen clarifies. “Your foot isn’t on it?”
“No,” Karen breathes and shakes her head. “I’ve been pumping the brake and it’s not slowing down.”
Karen, as always, is right. The speedometer is slowly but steadily climbing and her foot is slamming the brake pedal to the floor of the car.
When yanking the emergency brake doesn’t work and the car begins to speed up even more, Hen pulls her phone out of her hands and dials with steady, fast fingers.
“9-1-1, what’s your emergency?”
“This is off-duty firefighter Henrietta Wilson–”
or, hen and karen get into a car accident on the way to visit the wilson family. karen is hurt, and hen can't cope.

The problem with Steve was that he didn't think about things before doing them, and if he did think about them, he couldn't stop thinking. "Quit obsessing," Bucky used to tell him, "I can hear your brain whirring like one of those machines." It had stopped being funny after the first couple of times, but now it was sort of funny again, especially because Bucky, who actually was one of those machines, could make his arm whir and click and make all sorts of noises, and pretend it was Steve's brain doing it, instead.
In which Bucky has breakfast with Steve, if by "Bucky" you mean "a weapon that wants to be a person" and by "has breakfast" you mean "has a conversation" and by "with Steve" you mean "with Steve."
