Ava didn’t move, her fingers hovering a hairsbreadth from his heart. She remembered Syria, of course. “Huh,” she said, pushing a little further harder and more deliberately, fingers closing around the organ in his chest. “Like I was going to kill you?”
Why did he look almost…into this? Like…into it? Did he find it exciting that she could kill him in an instant? Actually…that might not be too far off. Maybe not the first time—he had everything then: his wife, his life, his country’s respect—but now? It did not take a genius to see that he was barely holding on and the will to live was mostly just automatic motions, with no will or desire behind it.
He could see her as his own suicide pill, or maybe it was just the power, someone who could match him in a new kind of way.
As her hand grasped around his heart, John’s body caved into full panic mode, a primal revulsion of something foreign and obscure inside of him. “Yeah,” he gasped out. “That was it.”

Valentina cleared her throat a little and Yelena elbowed her to the side. “Actually, we are not the New Avengers," she said clearly. The crowd fell to murmurs.
“What is she doing?” John asked under his breath.
“Shhhh,” Ava shushed him.
Yelena rested her hands on the edges of the podium. “My sister, Natasha Romanoff, was an Avenger. And she sacrificed herself to save the world. I want to honor her, but I do not want to take away all of the good, and the blood, that the Avengers gave to keep this world safe.” She filled her chest and glanced back at the row of mismatched delinquents behind her. She gave them a small smile then turned back to the crowd. “You can call us…the Thunderbolts.”
