Summary
If you asked anyone in Will's life they'd say he's moved on, and technically it is true — he's found new friends, had (and loved) a few boyfriends, done things his younger self wouldn't even think possible. Still, it wouldn't be entirely accurate, because that's not how Will sees it: moving on is a "directional" term, it implies the existence of a straight line connecting point A (the past) to point B (the future) that everyone must walk, regardless of what, or who, is left behind.
And this is something Will simply can't accept.
He has learned to live without El because he had to, but that doesn't mean he's moved on from her. Nor that he wants to.
He has learned to live without Mike too. But moving on? Na-ah.
OR
After years of miscommunication and regrets, in the late 90s Mike and Will lose touch for good.
One night in 2002 Karen Wheeler calls Will at his Montauk home and tells him that her son has just tried to kill himself.

However, as he was trying to get across the living room, his steps muffled by the thick rug, something stopped him in his tracks.
A moan. Coming from Tyler's room.
Will froze on the spot, his eyes widening. Slowly, he let his eyes trail towards the door, that swung half-open. And that's when he saw.
Mike and Tyler in Tyler's room, fucking making out against a wall. Mike's arms were loosely draped around his shoulders, Tyler's hands were firmly gripping his waist as he pressed him into the wall. They were grinding down against each other, little, muffled moans escaping both of them.
What the actual fuck?
Or: Mike and Will have had an intense argument and their friendship is still tense. But now, they’re spending a week at a cabin in the woods with their friends. And the presence of one of Lucas’ new friends, Tyler, just makes everything more complicated.

Summary
"Did you really think it'd be that easy? That you could control me better than I control you?"
It takes him a second to realize what's happening. Mike gasps out his name, confused and hurt, while Jonathan and Nancy stumble backwards as well. Will looks down at his own hands and realizes they're moving without his permission. He can feel them moving, can sense everything they touch, but the orders are not coming from him.
He's watching it happen but there's nothing he can do about it. His body does not belong to him anymore. Henry has made sure Will has a front seat to his worst nightmare as he watches his fingers wrap around Mike's neck and press down hard.
Or, Vecna takes control of Will's body and makes him attack Mike.
