Merlin knew he was pushing his limits, that he was millimeters away from overstepping the invisible line that Arthur had wordlessly set and the warlock had been careful not to cross, but he was never one to listen to the rules that were set for him. Especially not when he was afraid.
Agravaine had managed to weasel his way into his king’s mind and ingrain doubts in the people he loved, the people that loved him...doubts that only took place and bloomed as the traitor lied and deceived and planted things against them. Arthur wakes up in a Camelot where Merlin has never come to Camelot.
At first, Arthur is so distracted by Merlin's absence, that he doesn't realize how everyone is staring at him strangely.
Arthur: Is something the matter?
Knight: Are you - Excuse me, Sire - You are so calm today. Is everything alright?
Arthur: Calm? How on earth am I calm? Merlin is gone!"
Knight: Yes but ... Aside from this mysterious Merlin... You haven't chosen a servant today.
Arthur: If they aren't Merlin, then it doesn't matter.
Knight: *Wide eyes* You beat up this Merlin person?

Sonder: the feeling one has on realizing that every other individual one sees has a life as full and real as one’s own.
When Arthur looked into the future, he had always believed Merlin would be there, irreverent and irritating, helping him dress or fetching his meals or tagging along on quests whether he was invited or not. Now, he saw a different path, one where Merlin gave up the job he had never wished for in the first place – one that gained him very little pay, recognition or thanks – and pursued his own ambitions.
A new life far from Camelot.
Far from Arthur's side.

The crease between Sasha's eyebrows just deepened further as she seemed to be rereading the email a second time. After a few more seconds, she spoke up, "I have never seen anyone be as good at making a smiley face emoticon seem ominous as Elias."
Jon just nodded, looking extremely mournful. His face gave off the impression that someone close to him had just died, not that his boss had announced a sudden work trip.
(or; Elias decides that it would be a good idea to schedule a "mandatory fun" group bonding trip for the s1 Archives crew. Seems pretty harmless, right? Wrong.)

Jon raises a single eyebrow, the picture of disdain, whatever he wanted to talk about with Martin apparently forgotten.
“We'll be going somewhere…” –and here Tim pauses for dramatic effect– “...with a lot of people!”
“Oh, goody,” Jon says in the dryest monotone Martin has ever heard in his life.

“I don’t know,” Jon runs his free hand through his messy curls. When had his hair gotten so long? “It just popped into my head like a passing thought, like something I heard somewhere once. We haven’t known each other that long, Martin, I’m sure I just mixed you up with someone else at the Institute.”
“Like a memory?” Martin asks, quietly.
“Sure,” Jon says. “Like a memory.”
