Summary
Pollution always wanted something; it was in their nature to want, to consume, to seek out instant cheap gratification. It was not in their nature to need, to feel something so insistently important with such a clear means of satisfaction. They were used to a vague sense of dissatisfaction that was easily, if briefly, remedied by new toys and new messes. They were not meant to be hungry, in the human way. But Famine could push the feeling on anyone, and Pollution had always liked novelty, and it was so different to need than it was to simply want.
They liked it.

GLaDOS had a handful of tactics she’d return to over and over again in her bids to lure him out. One had been to promise him cake. Easy to dismiss, at first. Almost comical. Who risked their life for a cake? Who would accept a cake from a homicidal robot? Who would believe she even had cake in the first place?
After a few days without food, he had understood.Doug escapes Aperture, takes a shower, has a nap, and eats until it hurts. He’s having the first good day he’s had in a while, really.

“You know he’s a bit delicate, dear”.
That’s the word she always uses. Delicate. Like he’s a teacup or something. Mick hates it, and his dad hates it too, but the word he uses is hardly better. He always says that Mick is “just different”, and Mick knows by now that when people say “different” in that tone of voice, it’s not a good kind of different.
But “different” is definitely better than “delicate”.

After four years of space travel, Grace and Rocky are finally approaching Erid. Grace has been working hard to learn Eridian, but two days out, disaster strikes - his keyboard is broken and Rocky is hurt.
Luckily, Grace can speak some very basic Eridian with his single set of vocal cords. Unfortunately, he sounds like a newly hatched baby Eridian when he does.

It is slipping rapidly from Grace's fingers. Grace, who is starving to death, who is still recovering from the most precise amnesia Earth could give him, who turned around and left Earth in the hands of the Beetles save his one dearest companion even though it would kill him, is still a scientist at heart. Scientists solve problems. He finds ways to keep track.
Rocky wouldn't approve, but what Rocky doesn't know won't hurt him.

It's the same word as before, clear as day.
“But… But I can’t.” Grace says blankly. Rocky knows that. Nevermind the xenonite between them, keeping one or both of them from withering in indescribable pain then a swift death, both of their species were wildly incompatible. Trying to merge their biology would be less successful than mixing oil and water.
