"No, no, hey, look!" the—creature says, pushing up to its feet and moving closer to him, covered in mud and dirt and—and blood, with too-dark skin and too-bright teeth and eyes that look like they're shining red through grimy hair like tangled lichen. "I'm a kid like you!"
"Then why do your eyes glow?" Lan Zhan challenges, trying hard to be brave, like his xiongzhang would want him to be. "Why are you all bloody?"
The thing pauses. One dirty, thin hand raises to its face. "My eyes glow?" it asks, pushing the knotted hair from its face, and—
Oh. They do look like a kid.
"I guess that explains why people scream when I try to talk to them," the kid (?) says, closing their eyes and poking their eyelids like that will help them see the red. "And my clothes are bloody because I got hurt and washing fabric is hard. Your clothes are white. Those are gonna be so hard to keep clean."
"It won't matter," Lan Zhan tells them, feeling a little braver. Ghosts probably are whiny about more important things than washing clothes. "I'm not going to be out here for long. I'll find shufu and xiongzhang and then we'll go back to the inn."
"You can't leave. The forest won't let you."

Summary
"These marks are from a weapon, but not from an enemy. They are a reminder that I made a mistake." And that is the reason they remain, the reason he remains here. Despite the reason for the punishment being one he does not believe in anymore, he is still deserving of a punishment.
A-Yuan blinks up at him with big eyes. "If I make a mistake, will I get marks like yours?"
A wave of revulsion at the idea flows through Lan Wangji, followed by rage. He will never allow that to happen, for someone to misunderstand a-Yuan like that, to hurt him purposefully. "You should not be hurt for mistakes."
Tilting his head to the side, a-Yuan asks, "Then why were you?"
"Because I did not have anyone to protect me," he finally decides on saying. "But you do. I will protect you."
OR:
Lan Wangji cannot imagine allowing the Lan to punish his son the way he was punished, so he takes a-Yuan to his uncle Jiang Cheng, instead.

“You look at your own conduct,” Jiang Cheng said to him. “Look at yourself, and ask again if it’s just the qi deviation making me say such things, or if it’s the qi deviation that stops me from keeping quiet about them.”
