It’s foul, honestly- the deep pit in his middle, and how it begs not to feel so empty. He cannot ever fill it and he knows that much. On his worst days, he thinks back to the living armour. When he closes his eyes, he sees a portrait. The one of Laios, sat on his throne, dressed in his finery. Sometimes it feels like it’s painted inside his eyelids or framed somewhere on the back of his skull. It’s an image Kabru has always liked, ever since the day it got hung up. The king’s likeness captured near perfectly, with all his nervous edges buffed out. He looks like he belongs there.

“How precious are your futures?” asks the Sphinx. “How dear to you is the path you wish to take?” She bares her teeth in a cruel smile, and they all take an involuntary step back.
“Wait,” says Laios suddenly. “Look at her teeth!”
“Yes, Laios,” says Izutsumi. “We’ve all noticed the fangs. This really isn’t the time—”
“No,” says Laios, “those back teeth. She has molars- grinders. That means she’s an omnivore. But she can’t leave this circle, and you saw how nothing ventures within miles of this spot. I bet she hasn’t had anything other than…” he swallows, waving a hand vaguely at the pile of ex-adventurers, “...meat… for years .”
“So…what?” asks Izutsumi.
“Remember how good those marshmallows were?” asks Laios. “And that was only after a couple days without much of a varied diet.”
“You want to bet all of our lives,” Chilchuck says slowly, “on making a Sphinx a nice dessert?”

“Why don’t they just say that, then,” Laios can’t help but mutter sulkily.
Kabru rolls his eyes. “Because that’s not how politics works.”
Laios sighs. “I really hate politics…”
“I know, that’s what you have me for,” Kabru replies, a small smile on his lips.
Or in the midst of helping plan his sister's wedding, Laios realizes that his feelings towards Kabru might be more complicated than he had thought.

To devour, he thinks - as he catches Laios’ gaze, tracking his movements, before the other averts his eyes - as if he as been caught, cheeks a pale shade of pink; and be devoured, he thinks - as Laios sits on the edge of his bed; thinks how easy it would be, simply to step forward, to tilt his chin up and kiss him, what might happen if his feelings were reciprocated -
- arousal lances through him; white-hot, fist-clenching - his stomach lurches.
“No,” he says, instead - keeps a respectful arm’s length apart, as he watches Laios tug off his boots, his eyes tracking the flex of muscle under his tunic sleeves, the careful concentration in his eyes, as he works to unlace the tops. “No, I think I understand what you mean, when you say that.”
