“I don’t appreciate you tryin’ to psychoanalyze me 5 seconds in,” Shauna retorted, her eyebrow ridge knotting almost unnoticeably.

Trinity grips Yolanda’s hand tighter and winces. “Whatever you need to fucking do at this point.”
Cassie prods around her stomach, murmuring apologies every time Trinity winces. Then after a few seconds her eyes widen in shock. “U-um. Dr. Al-Hashimi? Can you take a look?”
Yolanda watches the attending tilt her head and go to stand next to Cassie. Her eyes widen along with her and she sprints towards the phone. Trinity can’t catch what she was saying, it was more mumbled and panicked than she liked. She hangs up the phone and turns around. “Alright I called Pedes, everyone gown up, we gotta do this fast.”
“Pedes, what-?”
“Santos, you’re in labor, you’re 10 cm dilated, gotta get this baby out now.”
Trinity has a cryptic pregancy, and afterwards her and Yolanda have to figure out what waits for them in the future.

Baran Al-Hashimi has just returned from Afghanistan. She's struggling with night terrors, an empty apartment, and the strange weight of being home when part of her never really came back.
Then the voicemails start.
A young woman she's never met, talking into a phone number that seemingly hasn't belonged to anyone in twelve years, who seems to be struggling just as much as she is. Baran never says a word or reveals anything. She simply listens, finding an unexpected comfort in the voice of a stranger.
She thinks, maybe if one day this stranger can be okay, then maybe she can be okay too.
So that's how it goes.
Until Baran walks into her first shift at PTMC and hears a voice she knows all too well.

A tear catches on the web of her bottom lashes before streaking down her ruddy, bruised cheek, the shellshock living vibrantly on her dazed face as she shudders in place a sight, he'll never be able to wipe clean from his memory.
Too goddamn young to be wearing so many invisible scars like it is.
"I killed him." She stutters, chest jumping and breath hitching. Blood dripping from the tip of her knife. "No, you didn't." The denial is instant, his tone firm but low as he inches toward her. "No — you didn't." He repeats again, hand held out as she shakes. "Joel." She cries, sorrow contorting her features. He finally gets his unsteady hands on her, cradles her face and steers her horrified gaze to look at him and only him.
She sobs as she clings to his wrist with her free hand and cries openly, stunned and frightened — scared out of her mind.
He's getting blood on her.
"Give me the knife and grab my keys, baby."
