“Come on, you have to!” Gwaine pleaded, pulling his best puppy eyes.
“Why? So that Arthur can call me a girl some more?”
The prince made a face. “First of all, calling you a girl has nothing to do with your feminine figure and everything to do with how you’re an absolute pansy!” Percival laughed, earning a threatening glare from Merlin. “Second of all, you’re not doing this for me, you’re doing this for the good of all of us.”
“Hear that, Merlin?” Gwaine piped up. “All of us. This is the future of Camelot we’re talking about! We’re going to catch our deaths out here if you don’t do it!”
“Gwaine,” Leon sighed, dragging a hand down his face. “Please stop.”
Merlin grinned “Thank you Leon—"
“You’re not going to convince him by pressuring him or taunting him.” The red headed knight turned to Merlin, a pleading expression on his face. “We request this of you humbly, Merlin. Please dress up as a woman.”

"You don’t belong here.” He holds out his hand, waiting for Arthur to take it and step out of the boat. Arthur ignores it. Uther drops his hand awkwardly and then attempts to reassure his son. “This place is a punishment. You are not deserving of it.”
At this Arthur’s features turn harsh. “I’m your son - of course, I’ll deserve it.”
Helpless in the face of Arthur’s anger, he turns away but makes one last gesture towards Arthur. A sign to follow him. He thinks about Arthur’s words; prays that Arthur’s fate isn’t predetermined - doomed due to bloodline and the sins of a father.

After Uther dies, he finds that he can move between the veil and Camelot. This ability stops when Arthur dies.

The warlock shot up from his bed and stalked out of his room, leaving the former king in his wake. He barely gave himself time to snatch his coat from the floor to warm up his freezing shoulders.
“Too soon? Merlin- look, I’m sorry, come back!”
Or: A week after Merlin buried his best friend and other half in Avalon, said best friend and other half that he buried in Avalon is suddenly trailing after him like a lost puppy. A dead lost puppy. That came back as a ghost. Merlin was going to scream.

“Y’know Arthur, you can’t keep going on like this,” Merlin said. It was as good a time as any to finally get into the messy stuff.
“I can and I will, Merlin,” Arthur said, lifting the wine again in defiance.
“Stop- stop with that bloody bottle,” Merlin tried to swipe the liquor. “You’re already drunk enough as it is.”
Arthur kept the glass infuriatingly out of Merlin’s reach in his opposite hand. Usually Merlin found a drunk Arthur hilarious, but this time he couldn’t focus on anything but the cold pit in his stomach.
“I will be drunk enough when I say I’m drunk enough….” Arthur took another swig and nodded silently for a moment. “Okay now I’m drunk enough.”
Merlin snatched the bottle and put it far out of Arthur’s reach.
Arthur Pendragon is not taking his father's death and subsequent Kinghood as well as he thought he could, but he can't very well let the whole kingdom know it. And the whole kingdom just so happens to literally mean every single person, including his friends. Luckily, Merlin is having none of it and with a tip from Gwen that maybe Arthur isn't doing very well that night, he goes to comfort the stubborn prat if it's the last thing he does.

He looked so beautiful when he said it, every inch the king, with the sunlight through the windows turning him gold. His voice had taken on that richness that sometimes infused Arthur’s words – that for the good of the kingdom voice, that let it be so voice, the voice that Merlin had come to understand meant another brick laid on the road to Albion.
Unfortunately, that voice had been co-opted for a fucking farce."

Arthur grins at him, waves his chubby hand. "Father!" he says, because he knows he should be formal with his father. There is no Pa here, no Dad or Da.
There's something shiny on his father's head. He points to it. "What's that?"
"Prince Arthur!" hisses the woman holding him, but his father only chuckles. The woman relaxes, just slightly.
"It's a crown, my son. One day, you will wear one just like it."
Arthur tilts his head, curiously. "What colour is it?" He thinks it's grey, just a shade off of the silver of the swords. It's the same silver-grey as half of the household's shiny jewelry, a not quite true silver. He doesn't think he likes it.
"It's gold," says his father. "There's a lot of gold here in Camelot, my son."
Arthur nods his head, and labels that silver-ish colour gold in his mind.
(Or: in a world where you can't see the colour of your soulmate's eyes until you meet them, Arthur can't see gold, and it makes his life as a prince much more difficult.)
