Shoko keeps asking him if they fell out because of a fight, or something. He assures her it’s much simpler than that:
Satoru moved to Kyoto for university, and Suguru stayed in Tokyo. They didn’t really keep in touch.
Sad, sure— but such fates are met by plenty of childhood friends.
(He knows Shoko texts Satoru a lot, knows they kept in contact— and he wonders if she asks him the same question: Did you have a fight?
He wonders if Satoru gives her a different answer.)

“Why don’t you want me?” Yuuji interrupts, voice small and at odds with how much larger than life he usually is. “Is it my family?” Yuuji continues, a tremble beginning in his voice. “Is it me? I know I’m not as smart as Kamo but…” he exhales, looking up at the ceiling, a single tear falling down the side of his face.
“I loved you. I love you. I’d be so good to you,” he hiccups, tears now spilling down his cheeks. He raises a hand to roughly wipe away his tears, over and over as new tears replace old ones until he gives up and holds his face in his hands.
A pinky promise made under the cover of night seals Yuuji and Megumi together from childhood to adulthood.
The story of how they grow up together, grow apart and find each other once more.

Summary
Ever since Satoru slipped from his life wrapped in a cloak of midnight and silence, Suguru has done nothing but yearn.
At first he tried to soothe it by calling non stop - fearing he had, inadvertently, made a mistake so abominable as to deserve capital punishment. Naïvely, Suguru believed he could still apologize, try to do better - try to fix what had been mishandled. Yet after countless tones giving way to an automatized message in a robotic, monotonous voice, cruel in its carelessness - the flickering flame of his hope slowly died out.
