It progresses rather quickly one night when Shane finds himself accidentally straddling Ilya’s lap.

Ilya stands slightly behind Marly as he rings the doorbell to a large Victorian house. He is not hiding. He just doesn’t want to crowd the door. A short older woman with thick gray hair, Marly’s grandmother, Ilya assumes, answers at the sound of the bell, immediately pulling Marly into a tight hug he has to nearly fold himself in half to reciprocate. Her eyes are closed as she hugs her grandson, and when she opens them, she looks at Ilya with surprise, then back at Marly with censure.
“You didn’t tell me you were bringing a friend,” she scolds Marly in French.
Ilya looks at Marly in surprise, discomfort blooming in his chest.
“You did not tell them I was coming?” he asks.
Marly’s grandmother’s face lights up, and she hits Marly’s arm more forcefully, pushing him aside and taking the bakery box out of Ilya’s arms to shove it into Marly’s.
“You are Cliff’s friend?” she asks in French, pulling Ilya into a hug of his own. “You speak French?”Or, Five times Shane and Ilya surprise people with their language skills and one time they surprise each other.

On grass? With no goalie? Easy. So fucking easy. Try skating, try maneuvering a puck down slick ice, then try getting said puck into a net that’s only marginally larger than the goalie in front of it. Try not stopping the game every time someone gets hit. And, also, try doing that for 82 games—plus playoffs—every single year.
But he’ll take it easy on this Tom Brady guy. It’s not his fault that he’s probably pushing forty and still clinging onto the only thing he’s ever been good at. And besides, there’s still some camaraderie there, athlete-to-athlete.

“People online, Shane,” Ilya gestured broadly with his free hand. “Someone tagged me and said they did not think you could last longer than two minutes.”
“What?” Shane scoffed, his voice cracking on the word. Got him. “I could probably last ten minutes,” he straightened up against the back of the couch.
Ilya sucked his teeth. “I don’t know, Shane. It’s much harder than it looks. Longest video I found is,” he glanced back at the paused Tik Tok video as if he was actually referencing it, “one and a half minutes.”
“Piece of cake,” Shane was standing before Ilya could even lock his phone.

Shane blew out a shaky breath, both from arousal, and the fact that even after all these years Ilya could still get such a reaction out of him. “You know I won’t.”
