He’d once told her about his old spellbook, a massive, celestial thing of leather and silver he’d left behind in Waterdeep. It contained some of the most advanced spells and rituals a mortal could cast, a keystone to a thing as close to divinity that a person could reach.
Now, Gale’s spellbook was a ratty little thing, perpetually tucked up his sleeve and barely any bigger than the palm of his hand, just a collection of scrap parchment they collected on their journey.

Summary
Astarion wasn’t sulking, nor was he hiding from Gale. He was simply taking a relaxing moment to himself. A relaxing moment in the dark, pressed between boxes in what was presumably a storage room.
Sometimes it's easier to ignore an issue when you've got more imminent problems to deal with. Now that he's finally safe, Astarion finds it might be harder to ignore said issues.

Gale stood a few steps away, looking about at the mouth of the alleyway. Checking for witnesses, the poor little prude. “I believe we’re as alone as can be expected here.” Just a whisper, more to himself than Astarion. Gale paced forward, eyes bright in his face; he stopped an arm length away. Astarion wondered if the man wanted a bit of play, a bit of an attempt at innocence, or if he wanted Astarion to make the first move, to throw himself at his brave, strong savior.
While he pondered that, Gale spoke. “I must admit, for all my skill in the arcane, all my abilities in my field of magic, I have unfortunately always been somewhat lacking in social graces. For that reason, I’m at a loss on how to bring about this subject with any finesse.” Gale rubbed at his well trimmed beard.
Luckily, Astarion was very well versed in these particular social graces. Starting in another weak purr, “Oh, my sweet-”
“You’re a vampire spawn, correct?” Gale asked with his hands clutched behind his back.

He still loved her, even though his never fading feelings choked him with guilt almost every day. It felt entirely too wrong to love the shell that she had become, yet he did. He’d love her in any shape or form, at any age, in any circumstance. If her resentment lingered when her grief waned, he’d happily be her punching bag. If she hated him for caring for her, if she wanted to hurt him, he’d let her. There was not much more to it.
If Selina ever felt the desire to kill him, he’d first find immortality, only to give her the satisfaction of being able to do it over and over again.
It seemed, eventually, she caught on.

Gale is trying to be noble. Astarion is trying to get laid. Neither of them are using their words. Contains: Animate Objects used for purposes Mystra never intended, a full and frank discussion of consent while one party is still impaled on a magical dildo, and the discovery that communication is the ultimate aphrodisiac. (But the double penetration helps.)

Canon Compliance: Happens during canon and is canon-plausible, with the exception of how Animate Objects works. Just go with it. -

Looking down at himself he felt nauseated, his arms were no longer arms, but wings made from skin and elongated fingers. How absolutely disgusting. It took him a few seconds to register that despite being a spawn and not a full vampire, he’d apparently just changed into a bat. Which was great. Now he got to die as a flying rat instead.
After an incident with a monster hunter, Astarion finds himself considerably smaller, fluffier, and unwillingly dragged into being cared for by a lonely wizard, who has no idea he's just brought a vampire into his home.

Set before the events of Polar Opposite and Matched Ambitions, this story tells Gale and Astarion, still in doctoral school in Blackstaff University, trying to finish their dissertation proposal in the heat of Flamerule summer. Gale decided to ask for Astarion's help in reviewing his draft, to which Astarion gladly help with some bribery. They also learned a bit about each other.
