The clock ticked loudly in the background, no longer drowned out by the talk of drunken patrons. Grillby sighed, slinging the towel he was using to wipe down the counter over his shoulder as he ran his fingers through his flames- …thinking about it, he supposes it could be called hair- no matter. The bar closed over thirty minutes ago, and Sans was still sound asleep on the bar. He didn’t mind the skeleton, don’t get him wrong- it was just… inconvenient. He wished that the monster would just, ask him to hang out like a regular person. Instead of forcing him to wait around in hopes that he would wake up and leave before his very loud brother showed up…
Grillby rubbed his face, giving Sans another minute…and then two… and then Grillby gave up, straightening out the towel to whack the shorter skeleton on the head. There’s a muffled “hmph” as the Halloween decoration finally appeared to spark life, resting his head on his hand with heavy eyes. -

This responsibility was only just starting to truly dawn on him, it was so much grander than he would ever be prepared for. After years of aspiring to join the Royal Guard only to have that goal tainted with the knowledge Undyne had unwittingly provided, this all seemed like a kick in the teeth. A comic joke at his expense for daring to use that knowledge to his own advantage, if only to avoid the expectations he knew he was unable fulfil.
He thought he was doing everyone a favour by dropping those dreams, facing a reality that Undyne had tried so desperately to spare him from. ‘BUT WE DON’T HAVE A CHOICE NOW.’ He tried not to sound bitter and failed miserably.
