This would be best understood if you have read Beauty from Ashes first, but the short backstory is that Ramin was assaulted in Afghanistan and John performed life-saving surgery on him. John lost track of him after that, having been wounded and sent home. Ramin's mother had relocated when John had tried to find her. But John never forgot. Mycroft tracked down Ramin, orchestrated a video interview, and after that John and Ramin kept in touch, meeting once on a visit to Afghanistan with Sherlock. Ilya has kept every photo Shane has ever sent him.
Well, not every photo, not the ones that Shane sends to Ilya before games against Montreal to try to rile him up unfortunately. But he saved every photo of Shane sent right after he woke up, Ilya begging to see Shane’s cute face and hair all mussed up from sleep. Every photo of inconsequential things, like Shane's protein shakes and the brand of face wash that Ilya liked to use when he was over so he could buy some for himself. Shane doesn't know this of course, they had a strict “delete all photos after sending” policy, but Ilya still kept them.
Shane said no saving pictures of them onto their phones, but he never said no printing.
Or: Ilya gets a Christmas gift idea after secretly printing pictures of Shane for months
