Perhaps it's pathetic, that the highlight of Arthur's day is seeing a particular customer. But he can’t help it. Linus is a beautiful, awkward, kind person, and Arthur has always fallen in love so easily.
Not that he’s in love with Linus. He barely even knows the man. But he’s in something. Infatuation, maybe. A crush.
Arthur is 23 years old, fresh out of university, working a dead-end convenience store job because nowhere else would hire him, and he has a crush on his repeat DICOMY customer who has a preference for cheddar jalapeño bratwurst. Not exactly where he saw himself ending up.

“My…oh!” Martin sets his mug down on some out of sight table and hurries away. Jon watches his back until that, too, is out of sight. In a moment, the music has fallen to a much more bearable level. In another, Martin has returned to the door.
“I’m so sorry,” he says, taking his drink back in hand. Shaking hand. His hand is shaking. Hard enough, in fact, Jon’s surprised its contents aren’t splashing over the sides. He’s smiling, too, a nervous little thing that Jon thinks might vanish if he makes any sudden movements. He raises his mug as though to offer it over. “Make it up to you with some cocoa?"
Or: sometimes the real Christmas is the cute neighbor Jon kissed along the way.

The sound of a passing car pulled Jon back to the present. His eyes blinked open. His arm ached again, the belt forgotten on the floor.
The guilt never really left. It just changed form.
It was pills, then heroin. It was missed deadlines and avoidance. It was limping without a cane because pride still whispered louder than common sense. It was ignoring Martin’s kind eyes and throwing himself off cliffs he built with his own hands.
It was Elias.
It was himself.
Jon stared at the ceiling until the high thinned out into nausea and ache.
Maybe next week with Martin, he’d talk about it.
Or maybe he wouldn’t.
He hadn't decided yet if he wanted to be forgiven.

What he did know was that James Wright was an old man. The man who had greeted him by first name as soon as he entered the office of the head of the Magnus Institute neither looked nor sounded like an old man. He sounded amused. The smile tugging the corners of his lips upwards was decidedly not meant for Peter though, given that he had yet to look up from the papers lying in front of him.

“I told you, Elias didn’t exactly leave me the Archivist manual. But at a guess?” Peter pretends to give it a great deal of consideration. “I’d say you’re capable of far more harm than you realize. For all the Watcher’s… passive proclivities, it’s old. Very old. And demanding of what it wants. Something you’re beginning to understand.”
Jon soldiers on through another wave of nausea. “A-and Elias? You’re going to run this idea of yours through him?”
“Pet, that’s going to be half the fun of this." Peter smirks delightedly. "Elias doesn’t get a say in this. He only gets to watch.”
