“It’s almost perfect,” Will narrows his eyes and leans forward, bringing up his hands to move Mike’s hair out of his eye, fixing up his vision and allowing him to see clearly Will’s focused expression and the lack of distance between their faces.
Maybe it’s the fact that Will somehow seems to radiate sunshine or that Mike’s time is approaching fast, but he’s seeing light. A whole lot.
“There. You look… beautiful.” Will smirks as he pokes fun at Mike’s earlier comment, and Mike needs to think of some cool last words, quick.
Mike Wheeler is dying. Well, maybe he isn’t, but that’s a lot easier to accept than the idea that he might be falling in love with his best friend.

“’Morning,” Mike grumbled, voice low from sleep.
“Noon,” Max corrected, as if she hadn’t only woken up thirty minutes before him.
“Wow,” he replied, squinting at the light. “Nobody thought to wake me?”
It happened casually after that, so casually it almost didn’t register at first. El laughed at something Lucas said, then turned toward Mike and leaned in, instinctively, easily, pressing a kiss to his lips like it was the most logical way to say good morning to him.

or: Mike and Will have been together for a year and a half when El comes back. The problem is, El assumes she and Mike are still together. The bigger problem is that Mike doesn’t realize Will thinks he might choose her.

Summary
After Will moved in with Mike and his family, he did his best to show Will how he felt. Sure, maybe the fact that he was technically still dating El made things a little murky, but he hardly ever saw her! And when they were together, it’s not like they ever did anything beyond kissing. Mike’s only with her to keep people from looking too carefully at how close he and Will are. As the weeks go by, Mike gets more and more frustrated with Will, because his best friend doesn’t seem to be picking up on any of the signals he’s sending his way.
He tries scenting Will, being overly affectionate, and even nuzzling Will’s mating gland. Will’s pheromones have always been alluring to Mike, but lately, they’ve become almost unbearable in the best possible way.
But, as Will gets closer and closer to his first heat, Mike decides that it’s time to ramp things up, especially when other Alphas start to show interest. After all, Will is his Omega, even if he doesn’t know it yet.
Meanwhile, poor Will is horny and confused.

The words had no sooner left his lips before Mike realized exactly where and when he was.
Will stared back at him, a smile on his lips. Eyes pained. Like Mike was hurting him. Purposefully misunderstanding him. Rejecting him.
His body shook, if not from what he’d just lived through, then from the realization that Will was right.
And he was smiling through it, for Mike’s sake.
Will, selfless as ever, still protecting Mike even through his own rejection.
Or: Mike somehow gets trapped in a time loop in which he loses the love of his life over and over again. The only way of escape is coming to accept a certain truth about himself.
