It’s not like it was complicated to put the pieces together, is the thing. Everyone around Ilya starts to notice something. Some see a particularly troubling look in his eyes. Some notice the patterns in his questions to the team whenever they spend an extended amount of time trapped together on the bus or the plane. At least one is clued in by his wife, who took two random passing comments and created a complex and fairly accurate theory. Some stumble upon their partner and their teammate in an awkwardly intimate position, only to discover they were fighting over their theories.

Their eyes snapped to him in unison, startled and intense. Hollander croaked, "What?"
"There's over sixteen hundred guys in the MLH and AHL," he reminded them, because it had felt improbable to him when he first heard until he remembered the sheer size of the hockey world. "There's — well, we don't know how many of us there are, but there's at least seventeen of us that know each other. Plus you two. We watch out for each other."
His eyes enormous, Hollander asked, "There's, what? A secret underground gay hockey network?"
Scott shrugged. "Yeah, basically."

Ilya and Shane find their way into The Tennis Club, a network of closeted hockey players that hook up - so long as everyone keeps it casual. Which is no problem! They can do casual, right?

Not completely able to accept to accept how he feels, his therapist issues him a challenge to hook up with a guy and see for himself.
So when Cliff's eyes land on Eric Bennett at gay bar, he sees the older goalie in a totally new light. Despite Eric's apprehensiveness, something about Cliff totally disarms him... and teaches him a lot more about himself than Eric ever imagined.

Shane is, by any reasonable metric, the best hockey player in the world; the only other person you could say that about with a straight face is Rozanov, and they've been orbiting each other since they were eighteen.
Of course the man Shane fell into something with would be the one person on the planet who could meet him at his own altitude. Who else was it going to be? A linemate? An accountant?
Shane Hollander has never cried in front of Hayden Pike. Not after losses, not after injuries, not once in six years of sharing hotel rooms. So when Shane shows up in their Boston hotel room with bloodshot eyes, rambling about tuna melts and first names, saying the girl he's been texting isn't a girl—and isn't just anyone—Hayden does what any reasonable person would do: lies awake all night dismantling everything he thought he knew about the Montreal Metros' biggest rival.
By morning, he has a problem. By Monday, he has a plan. By Friday, he has Ilya Rozanov in his dining room and Shane paralyzed in the driveway.
Hayden can build the space. He can't make them talk.
