It was seven-forty on a Thursday night, and the overhead fluorescent banks had long since dimmed into automated power-saving mode, leaving Ray bathed in the harsh, sterile glow of twin monitors. His eyes burned behind his wire-frame glasses, his collar felt a half-size too tight, and his shoulders were curled into the familiar, protective hunch he’d worn through four months of an unpaid logistics internship.
If he kept his gaze glued to the glowing green cells, he wouldn’t have to think about the fact that he was twenty-three, entirely unremarkable, and utterly consumed by the woman sitting thirty yards away behind the frosted glass partition of the executive suite.
A quiet, measured click echoed across the linoleum walkway.
Ray’s right pinky froze over the Enter key.

Mikey took the zine from him and read through the poems. They were short, most of them about a tragic breakup, but some were about growing up and friendship, which- okay maybe they were a little cheesy, but Mikey found them kinda sweet. He wouldn't admit it if asked, though. But they were good. On the last page there was, written in different handwriting "Come see Fall Out Boy this Friday @ the Knitting Factory 8PM!!" Mikey flipped through the zine again. The band's name sounded oddly familiar.
"Hey, Frank," he said. "You wanna go to a show on Friday?"

He pulls back and rests his forehead on Ray’s. “Baby.”
“I’ve got you,” Ray says. “Are you…?”
“I wanna, I think…I wanna change the mood. I’m ready.” Mikey’s trying to not feel humiliated, because communicating about what you need is good for the soul and whatnot. And he told Ray that they both need to be verbal here. The hostility of silence is what’s kept Mikey away from this for so long, the idea that he would have to be alone with his thoughts and his sensations.
But Ray is good to him. Ray would never do that to him.
“Okay,” Ray says easily. “How do you want to be?”
