The water had swallowed Jane whole—one moment, her voice sharp and commanding, her figure poised on the edge of the bridge; the next, gone, the echo of her splash barely registering over the chaos.
Maura couldn’t breathe. She couldn’t move. Her legs locked in place as her mind spiraled, the world narrowing to the dark, churning river below. Her knuckles whitened against the cold railing, her chest tight with the weight of her trapped breath.
Then, Frost’s voice cut through the haze: “We’re sending boats out now!”
That was when she screamed.

When a pandemic of Runespoor Fever sweeps through the wizarding world at the end of 2003, leaving a full quarter of its victims infertile, the International Confederation of Wizards takes drastic action. A marriage and reproductive law is enacted, throwing the wizarding world into upheaval.
Lightly inspired by the 1989 film The War of the Roses, (but without the animal death,) and our own recent pandemic.
She was wearing one of her neat, buttoned-up outfits as always; brown herringbone trousers and a silky cream blouse that covered her from throat to wrist, her hair braided around her head but not quite as neat as usual. He stopped several feet from her and frowned. “Why do you smell of smoke, Granger?”
“Does it really matter, Malfoy?” She skewered him with a glare, arms folding across her chest. “Perhaps I took up smoking.”
“And did you?”
She gave him an ‘are you mad?’ look. “No, I burnt down my office,” she said exasperatedly, as if it should’ve been obvious, and he tried to refrain from giving her an ‘are you mad?’ look in return.

What he does not know, however, are that the benefits of being an honorary Avenger only exist if you sign over all of your autonomy as an enhanced individual to the United Nations, and consequently, the government. What Peter thinks is a matter of debate turns out to be a dealbreaker that leads to a nationwide manhunt for a masked vigilante who refuses to comply to the Sokovia Accords.
Now, with the police, the Department of Damage Control, and Tony Stark himself attempting to capture and recruit Peter, he has to reevaluate what it means to trust someone, and if Iron Man really is the hero he takes him to be.

Harry’s eyes land on Malfoy. He’s the last counsellor in the circle. One blond eyebrow is arched, his smirky mouth turned up at the corners. That can’t be good.
Harry clutches his clipboard; lets the edge of it dig into his skin. When did Malfoy’s hair get so long? It had only reached his chin the last time Harry saw him.
“Counsellor Malfoy.”
“Potter. Fancy seeing you here.” Malfoy has the same drawl, but it’s deeper. Richer. Like he has in fact grown in the intervening years.
Harry taps his pencil against his clipboard. “Care to share your name and an interesting tidbit?”
“So many of my tidbits are interesting.” Malfoy’s hair falls in loose, golden waves over his shoulders.
Harry regrets the use of the word ‘tidbit’ with every fibre of his being, but he nods gamely at Malfoy. Whatever he says can’t be that bad.
“I’m Draco Malfoy, and I was a teenage Death Eater.”

Paula, working her particular remote magic from Boston the way she did with everything else, handled the parts of the preparation that involved actual logistics, the crib ordered and shipped and arriving on the one afternoon Ilya happened to be home to sign for it, the car seat researched down to its safety ratings and simply appearing, the small mountain of things a first-time parent doesn't even know they needed, materializing on the schedule of a woman who had apparently anticipated most of it before Ilya thought to ask. He'd send her a voice memo, something about a monitor, the kind that shows the breathing, I read about it, and three days later the monitor he’d vaguely described would be sitting on the nursery shelf.
Unlike Ilya, Shane received that absent update the way you do when you’re not allowed to have your phone on: not at all. He was thirty thousand feet over a random state in the US with his phone dark, and the silence that was screaming at Ilya from the kitchen counter simply never reached him, a small mercy, or small cruelty, that Shane got to spend those hours completely in the dark.
He would carry the weight of those twenty minutes for the rest of his life: the actual physical presence of her, impossibly small and impossibly light and, for a little while, still warm; the way he had not known how to hand her back when it was time, had not been able to make himself do it, so that in the end someone had gently had to take her from him, sobbing like he was breaking in two, because, ostensibly, he was.
