"You're so pretty," Mike muttered out, eyes widening as he realised he had said that out loud.
Mike saw a slight frown cross Will's face, he was just as confused as Mike, maybe more. He felt the oddness of the circumstance too, but he was also drunk, his inhibitions weren't there to tell him he shouldn't do what he was going to do next.
Both breathing shallow and fast, hearts beating out of both their chests, Will began to lean down towards Mike. He stopped just as their noses brushed, moving his hand up slightly to lace his fingers through Mike's soft curls. "Mike?"
Mike hummed jaggedly in response, it was all he could muster as his stomach was doing backflips from Will being this close.
"Mike, is this...?"

Summary

At just eight years old, the word "wrong" was tattooed onto the back of Will Byers’ eyelids by a man who didn't know how to love him for who he was.
By the age of 16, that word had grown into a wall, shielding his heart from even the people closest to him. In California, Will meets the HIV Crisis face to face and begins to believe his life is meant only for sacrifice—that to keep Mike and El happy, who he truly is must stay buried at all costs.
Mike Wheeler is struggling with a wall of his own. Between the letters he can't quite make romantic and the distance he feels from his own life, he loses the girl that upheld his own illusions of being 'normal.' Left in the rubble, Mike finally starts allowing himself to explore another way. And a way seems to open when the Byers move into their basement after the military's occupation of Hawkins.

THE Superman up and leaving him, because if Eleven truly was Superman, he would absolutely leave without hesitation, he can fly, and he has lasers, and—…wait, Eleven’s a girl. Why doesn’t he just say a female hero?

Basically, this fic is mostly focusing on the internalized homophobia of both Will and Mike as Mike slowly realizes the many traits he thought he loved about El were everything Will had, while Will tries to force himself to like a girl (he won’t).
Written before many leaks/before season 5 release and plot was planned out before as well so this is not fully accurate!

It's been a year since the streets of Hawkins, Indiana split open, since the Upside Down became the right side up. They managed to kill whatever had become of the last (truly) living member of the Creel house, but not before Hawkins became a ghost town. Now, the population is barely pushing seven hundred, but they decide it's safer that way.
They thought everything with the Upside Down, with Vecna, with the Mindflayer, with Brenner and everything else had ended, had gone away. They thought they were safe, finally.
Oh, how wrong they were.
