Mike wanted to find his own way too but he felt like he was being tied into the bottom of a basement with chains that were just too tight. He couldn't breathe in there. He needed to get out from the basement.

Mike said trying to keep his voice steady while he felt like he was drowning.

After the massacre at the Mac-Z where Will awakens his powers, he collapses from the strain of killing three demogorgons at once. As Mike takes care of him in the aftermath, his concern for Will causes him to come to some realizations about his feelings regarding his best friend, and he is left to grapple with that knowledge as he watches over Will while he rests.
Meanwhile, Robin and Lucas reunite with the group, looking for answers about what happened. There was one thing Robin was sure of though. After witnessing Mike taking care of Will in the Squawk, she’s certain his feelings are not unrequited.

“Oh, thanks Mike,” Will says, flustered. “I’m okay, but maybe—” he fumbles with his coat pockets, distracted, searching for something, finally pulling out a pair of blue gloves. “You might need these. You can have mine.”

This, Mike thought vaguely, his eyes focused on the soft curls of Will’s damp hair, was something he had been forcing out of his mind for years upon years. Because yes, the Party could easily admit that Will was one of the most gentle, kind people they’d ever encountered (especially in Hawkins of all places), but there was this small, nauseating part of himself that told him that they didn’t really know Will. Not like Mike did. Lucas and Dustin were great, that was just a given, and Mike knew they cared for Will deeply—as deeply as Mike, though? Not by a long shot.

Will grapples with his unrequited feelings for Mike Wheeler, attempting to move on. However each interaction with Mike ignites a flicker of hope in Will, yet is tinged with the awareness that his feelings will never be reciprocated. But when everything comes to a head, blood and secrets are spilled which changes everything.

Eddie’s smirk grew wider. Suddenly he was up, jumping in the air, his feet hit the top of the table and Steve had to throw his head back to look at him standing on top of it. The old wood let out a miserable squeak.
“It means, Harrington,” he said before crouching down, “that just from looking at your sweet, innocent face, I can tell that you would clutch your pearls if you would try anything with just a little bit of flavour.”
Steve frowned upon the implication. “You calling me boring, Munson?”
Eddie had lit a cigarette. When the flame came up it didn’t only spark the tobacco but also something inside Steve that he didn’t know he was holding down.
“No,” Eddie mumbled just before a cloud of smoke hit Steve’s face, “just saying, live a little.”
