Summary
Shane Hollander is on the Ice when an overhead announcement causes him to spiral. The Centaur's Plane has crashed. Shane needs to hear from Ilya now. There is only one person in the world who can pull him back from the brink and Shane doesn't even know if he's alive.

Excerpt:
Shane snapped around “If what? What the fuck did you say?” His voice was wild now, no attempt to conceal his fear or his breaking heart.
The bewildered other player just said “I just saw the news report, coach had it up on his phone, said someone died in the crash…” he said more but Shane's brain had stopped processing anymore information beyond the fact someone had died.
In fact it wasn't just his brain that had stopped, his limbs went numb, he sucked in a sharp breath and his heart was trying to claw it’s way out of his chest. Ilya might actually be dead; this wasn’t just Shane being Shane this was real. Way to fucking real. He was vaguely aware of the feeling of the cold ice against the side of his head. Shane had dropped down onto the ice. He hadn't passed out, he hadn't tripped, he's body simply gave out from the shock.

He told the Jess what he wanted to do and he realized just how strange this was going to sound. She teased him a little.“Really this is what Shane Hollander hockey legend wants? I was imagining something hockey related, big bold and daring.”
Then he told her why he was getting the tattoo (well he told her parts of the story). He told her that it was meant to be a surprise gift for his partner. That he was a very private person and he didn't want to be super public with his relationship. But he wanted his partner to know just how much he loved them.

Scott couldn’t clearly hear what they were saying but he could see Shane push his shoulder and he swore he heard a giggle. He watched Shane’s face when Rozanov got up off the bench to compete in Shot Accuracy challenge.It was a face and feeling he recognized…Shane had a crush on Rozanov…that poor guy.
Scott had had his fair share of unrequited crushes and that was not a good pathway. He decided at that moment he was going to talk to Shane and help him from getting hurt.

Originally, these stories weren't intended to fit together, but they (mostly) do, so now I consider this a sort of miniverse of its own. There may be a few minor inconsistencies here and there, but I generally try to make them work. You will encounter Megan Rapinoe. You will see the same OCs in multiple fics. You will get to journey with them from pre-series to beyond the events established in canon (as of Jan 2026 when Unrivaled has not yet been published).

The room is silent except for the beeping of monitors.
In 2023, Shane takes a bad hit on the ice. When he wakes up, the last thing he remembers is a tuna melt.

Shane goes to Tampa. The next morning, Troy Barrett receives a text from Ilya:
“Bringing boyfriend to breakfast. Tell team to be not weird.”
The Centaurs are, unsurprisingly, weird about it but become the best support system they could ask for as Shane and Ilya navigate the choice to fully begin their lives together and love each other out loud.

Summary
Instead of Shane, it is Ilya who suffers a concussion during the Boston-Montreal game in April 2017. Dazed and agitated, Ilya briefly starts speaking and responding only in Russian and the medics can’t calm him down. Luckily, Shane started studying Russian after Ilya spoke to him in Russian on the phone from Moscow. For no particular reason. Certainly not because he’s fallen in love with Ilya Rozanov.
In Montreal with lingering concussion symptoms, Ilya is advised not to fly home for a few days, and the hospital won’t release him without assurances that he has someone to stay with him until his symptoms improve. Luckily, Shane conveniently has a condo in Montreal no one knows about and a few days before he has to travel again.
But Ilya’s symptoms don’t resolve after a few days. Which is okay; Shane can handle it. He can take care of Ilya, study Russian, lead his team into the playoffs, and keep Ilya’s continued presence in Montreal a secret. He can do everything, no problem. He is Shane Hollander after all.
