“I’m glad it’s you,” Mark says. It makes Peter’s chest hurt again. “Not just because anyone else would’ve shot me dead, you know. If there was anyone who was going to put me away, I really am glad that it’s you,” he repeats, and his voice is tender in a way Strahm has never known it to be, so much so that it scares him more than either of the two dead bodies surrounding them, more than the panic that builds with every second they spend standing around and not traveling to the station.

But some habits were harder to ignore. Like the bruises.
They weren’t training injuries. John knew the difference. These weren’t the deep gashes and clean breaks they got while boxing or wrestling each other. These were small. Random. Sharp scratches across his arms. Purple-yellow marks blooming along his ribs. Sometimes John would catch a fresh red line down the inside of Bob’s wrist if he lifted his arm slightly, like it hadn’t finished healing yet. John noticed. He always noticed.
He wasn’t supposed to care this much. He wasn’t supposed to lie awake at night thinking about it, wondering if Bob was okay, wondering if he should say something. But John wasn’t sleeping. Not well. Not since the third night in a row he saw Bob flinch when someone touched his shoulder too suddenly.
It bothered him. It ate at him.
Or Bob sleepwalks and is scaring John.
