Mike opens his eyes. Then–
“Will,” he says, and it comes out a bit strangled. “Is that a puppy?”
This is a bit of a stupid question. Mike isn’t dumb. He knows what a puppy looks like. The thing in Will’s hands– a little wrinkled and brown and very covered in fur– is definitely a puppy.
Will brings home a dog. It goes about as well as expected.

The terrible, awful thing about finally getting what he wanted — namely, Mike — is that now he wants more, the selfish creature that he is. When he was younger, he’d been able to convince himself that kissing Mike, just once, would be enough to last him a lifetime. Foolishly, he’d thought that he could relish that single kiss and live a peaceful life, one where Mike was still his friend and nothing changed but his feelings would dissipate.
Instead, they grew; they’re still growing, Will fears, growing bigger and bigger each time Mike and him get together, because every sound Mike makes when Will kisses him makes Will want to find ten more little gasps and whines and groans, and each time Mike twists their fingers together and pants against his skin Will thinks about how much better it is than the time before.
will and mike are - something, and will's not entirely sure what. whatever they are, he wants more, but he's not sure if he can have it.

“A - partnership,” Will gets out. “Of sorts. A safety net. Companionship. Shared resources,” he repeats, harping on that phrase because he feels like it’s the most logical, pragmatic argument he has in his arsenal. And then he swallows, and his voice loses some of its rehearsed steel and blunt practicality as he says, “Affection. Support. A shoulder to cry on without judgement, if you ever need it. A hand to hold.” Deep breath in. Hot blood rushing through his cheeks. “Kissing, if you want it. Sex, if you want it.”As the AIDS epidemic runs rampant, and the Party is about to leave for college, Will makes a decision. He will not spend his entire life wondering over what-ifs. He needs closure. He needs an answer, once and for all. So he offers Mike a proposition: pool their resources. Split costs. Lean on each other. Rely on each other. Be faithful to each other - and, thus, be shielded from the threat of AIDS entirely.
Mike is straight. He thinks. But Will has some very good points, and if Mike went there with anyone... it would be Will. Plus, this isn't forever. It's just a temporary precaution. A mutually beneficial arrangement, for however long they need. Right?- Language:

Now, someone walked into the room. A boy, awkwardly standing at the side of his bed, looking over him worriedly. His hair was brown and scruffy, and he had big baby doe eyes and a yellow-and-blue horizontally-striped shirt like a cartoon character. The window was lighting him up like he was important to Mike’s narrative. The curtains are blue, thought Mike, this boy is light. I love metaphors. Maybe he was high on the pain meds. Upon seeing him, Mike felt a great affection, a great peace. Plus, he had long eyelashes. Mike almost giggled to himself. He was definitely a little high.
“Hi.” breathed Mike.
“Hi.” he said, hesitating.
“We’re friends?” Mike asked hopefully.
Or: During the Party's final battle with Vecna, Mike is gravely injured and loses his memories. He wakes up in a hospital only remembering a handful of inconsequential little things, like how much he loves a boy who seems like light.

In which it’s well past midnight in New York, Will can’t sleep, and Mike feels like they barely know each other anymore.

Summary
Any other superpower would have been better, really. Fire-wielding, telekinesis— even growing an extra arm would have been preferable to mind-reading.
Will hates his newfound powers, and he hates the constant headaches that come with them, and he hates the weird thoughts and feelings he never even wanted to know about in the first place that constantly invade his mind. He hates it all, but he can’t escape his own brain— so short of removing his head entirely, what can he even do to change it?
But— thankfully— with a little help from his friends, and a lot of pain from Mike Wheeler, Will learns to control his telepathy— and, maybe, learns a little too much from his best-friend-slash-lifelong-love’s intricately confusing mind.

It would be funnier if Mike wasn’t so fixated on Will, at the miserable huddle she is between their friends. Her makeup’s smudged under her eyes, tears tracks glistening down her flushed face. She’s half asleep against Lucas, cheek squished against her shoulder. Lucas meets Mike’s eyes when she sees the look on her face. Knows she sees everything Mike’s feeling right now, always has.
“She only wanted you.” She explains apologetically. Mike’s heart is in her throat, nerves buzzing with the instinct to protect her. To take care of her. At the fact that out of all of their best friends, she was the only one Will wanted to get her home.
