“So. The church?” Miike asked.
“The church.” Will said firmly.
The building radiated with a sort of holy innocence, looking almost untouched and definitely out of place in the Upside Down. Will jiggled the front door handle and groaned. “Locked.” He thought for a moment. “Stand back, Mike.”
Mike did, watching Will back up a few feet. “What are you-”
Will began in a running start before throwing the weight of his body against the door with a bang. The door swung open but Will kept his balance, wincing. “That was loud. And kind of stupid.”
“Are you kidding me?” Mike stared at him in a sort of awe. “I’ve only ever seen people do that in movies. Holy shit. That was epic.”
“Oh shut up.” Will blushed. “It was nothing.” As they made their way into the church, Will took off his jacket, slinging it over his shoulder and stretching out his arm. Mike watched the muscles in his back strain against his t-shirt, his biceps and lats bulge from the simple stretch. Mike swallowed, hard.
“Hey, it’s not too bad in here.”

Summary
He’d stared at Will without really seeing him, so caught up in his own thoughts—a constant, monotonous beat of oh my God, I’m alive. Oh my God, Will has powers. Oh my God, he saved me.

The thought had stopped him short, had landed with a soft and devastating clarity.

But Mike had let them.

If anyone had asked, Mike would always say his favorite season was fall.
Could you blame him? There was just so much to love about it – the shifting hues of amber, bronze, and ruby that adorned the falling leaves in Central Park; the dwindling temperatures that brought relief from the sticky summer heat; the feel of a new knit sweater against the fresh gales of fall breeze. The gloomy sky and crisp air perfectly synthesized into the type of atmosphere that let Mike justify another cup of coffee, and hell, he’d take that over the glaring sun and thick humidity of New York summers any day.
What was there to not love about fall? Honestly, he couldn’t think of one thing even if he tried his hardest –
Oh. Right.
His boyfriend hated the fall.

"I don't know," Will sighs, sounding tired and suddenly older, more mature. "I only mean that… That's what you didn't say, isn't it? That thing that would've made El want to bring you with her? You said that you were sorry you didn't say it more." Will's facing the mirror but looking down, like maybe the water splashed on the stained countertop could reflect him better. "And- and now you've said it, and.. confessed feelings you've kept pent up, feelings that make you feel like you're choking, drowning. Like you're about to burst." Will exhales forcefully, blinking and finally looking up to Mike's eyes, sincere and quiet. "And it can be scary, saying how you feel. But– you did. You were brave, Mike, really brave. You must feel so free now."
Will offers him a tiny smile, like a flicker of hope in the dingy bathroom, and somehow the cracked window has managed to sneak in enough sun to bathe him in light, like it can't help but shine on him and tease Mike with the wonder of the boy in front of him, keeping him just painfully out of reach.
But I don't, Mike thinks. I don't feel free. I'm not brave, I'm terrified. None of this feels right.

“Will!” Mike couldn’t see anything. He was panicking. Five seconds ago he’d been leaning against the couch with Will’s head in his lap. Now he wasn’t. Mike’s basement began to fade back into view. But... it wasn't right. His grandma’s old quilt, the one that had been on its last legs and had finally fallen apart over a year ago, was laid against the couch. The walls of the basement were covered in Will’s old art, just the old stuff, not the new stuff.
“Mike.” A voice cut through the hollow silence.
Mike pales. A boy of around fourteen stands in front of him now, in a sweater and jeans. His freckled skin is flushed with red and his almost black hair is out of order. He looks scared. It's HIM. It's Micheal Wheeler. Or was, anyway.

In the winter of 1988, Mike meets his younger self in a vision of sorts, and helps him sort through his shit.

Summary
For not the first time that night, Mike wonders if Will is still awake in the basement.
Tossing and turning on the old spare mattress that Mike had relegated him to instead of- Well. Mike's thoughts slam into a wall. Even if he had let Will sleep in his room, he'd still be on that mattress. Just... just on the ground beside him instead of two floors down.
"You're a freak," Mike mumbles to himself, squeezing his eyes shut.
Or, Mike and El are taking a break, and in the absence of being able to pour himself into that relationship, he's spending entirely too much time thinking about Will... who just so happens to be living in his basement. During the 18-month time jump where the Byers have been living with the Wheelers.

The words dropped into the space between them like a stone dropped into a still lake. The air rippled and shifted like it was trying to accommodate Mike’s answer before it fell from his lips. Like it was expecting the heavy truth before it settled.
Mike didn’t move. Didn’t blink.
For a terrible, terrible second, he felt inclined to tell the truth. A name hovered over his tongue. A single syllable, just out of reach to make its damning presence known, but far away enough for him to pretend it wasn’t there, waiting to be let out.
Mike almost reached out to grasp it, almost let it slip quietly into the still air of the room.
Don’t over explain. Ambiguity sells.
“No,” he said.
Mike felt something in his stomach curdle violently.
He knew it was a lie.
