Summary

Behind him, Will says, “Mike?”
Mike does not reply. Jonathan glances over his shoulder, mid-step, and pulls up short in confusion at what he sees. Mike is still by the van where the darkness is deepest, his white t-shirt dappled with darker shadows, standing stock-still. Unnervingly still. Stiller than Jonathan has ever seen him. No bouncing leg, no tapping finger, no nothing; he’s just standing there, staring down at his blood-covered hands in a faraway sort of fascination.
His wet blood-covered hands.

He has never in his life been so grateful for Mike, who always seems to be there when Jonathan can’t be, picking up his slack, watching out for Will. Supposedly even time is relative, but if there’s anything truly fixed in the fabric of the universe, it’s that Jonathan can count on Mike Wheeler in the matters that concern his little brother. Wherever Will is, there Mike will be also, in one way or another. Sometimes, that’s annoying. Right now, it’s anything but.

They make it out of the neighborhood more or less unpursued, but Jonathan has his hands full—overflowing, even—in the backseat, dealing with panicked teenagers, a hysterical Argyle, and a dying man. Possibly dying, that is. Fuck, Jonathan hopes he isn’t dying. ---- so so so good

Lonnie could make Jonathan kill, but he still couldn’t make him into someone worth sticking around for, or at the very least, being even a halfway decent person for, forget being a halfway decent dad.

Shadows don’t glisten.Blood does.
Will seems to understand at the same time, because he lurches forward a step and lets out a strangled sort of noise that might be Mike’s name, wrenched up through seizing lungs and a closed-up throat and the most terror Jonathan’s seen on his brother’s face since they got their first proper look at the Mind Flayer last summer in all its grisly, flesh-wet glory.
The next moment, Mike’s knees buckle, and he’s falling, falling, falling.

“You should,” Mike says quietly. His eyes close again, and he leans his temple against one of Will’s knees. Neither of them says anything after that.

“Okay,” Will whispers back, and another tear slides down his cheek to drip onto their entwined hands.Jonathan looks away. It’s the least he can do.

“Thanks,” he half-whispers, “for looking out for Will.”Something like the suggestion of a smile lifts one corner of Mike’s mouth. He says, “Always.”

“Hey,” Jonathan tries, and Will flinches like he’s been slapped. He sets the bundle of bloody clothes down on the countertop and takes a step closer. “You okay, bud?”His brother makes a sound that might optimistically and under great duress be interpreted as a laugh. It sounds much closer to a sob to Jonathan.

Will spends the drive cross-legged on the floor between Mike and the driver’s seat. He doesn’t take his eyes off him the entire way to the junkyard.

Everything intentionally hurt him, but nobody needed to know that. He was simply a blunt, rude soul. He doesn’t accept Max into the party and he tells his best friend, who always got called slurs, that it wasn’t his fault he didn’t like girls. If he calls Nancy an asshole or tells Lucas to fuck off, nobody bats an eyelid, right? It’s just Mike Wheeler! Completely emotionally unavailable, let him get on with it, right?

And then Will crawled through his window a few days ago and told him that he felt like he was losing him, every aspect of him, that he wasn’t himself anymore in complete tears and all Mike could do was tell him that he was right here and he was still him.
He knew Will was right.

Billy Hargrove hit Mike just a little bit harder, Max woke up just a little bit later and Mike Wheeler had always had shitty luck. He gets drugged, hauled to Russia and jabbed with so many needles that he doesn’t know where he began and the needles ended.
But it’s not so bad (He’s lying, it fucking sucks) at least he has the boy in the bed next to his, and relatively regular mealtimes and- Yeah, he's having trouble coming up with anything positive.
He just wants to go home, but the doctor and this strange new thing in his chest isn’t going to let him. That’s fine, he’ll just have to get himself out.

Summary
“Dance if you’re real.” Mike begs him. Whispering as if they could be overheard. His heart drums in his chest, each beat like a clap of thunder, and his stomach rolls as if he’s on a rollercoaster.
After a long, torturous moment, Will begins to sway again.
His arms lower to Mike’s waist. They wrap around like ribbons around a gift, and his palms feel giant as they curl around his sides. Mike feels small again, but not in the same way he felt around his dad or Henry. He melts into Will's embrace as it swallows him up, encasing him like a shield.
It’s just as Mike had pictured it years ago, when he’d watched Will dance with a girl and dreamed of switching their places.
Or: Mike is trapped in the thrall of Vecna's curse, and only Will can save him.

Summary
It was a monster, not a man.
Mike trembled as he crawled away from the approaching figure, one long, claw-like hand with talon-like nails flexing and unflexing. “Who are you?” He demanded, sounding stronger than he felt, “What the fuck do you want?!”
The monster grinned; his smile was like a ray of darkness and evil. Pure evil. Mike’s back hit the wall, the boy scrambling for somewhere else to flee to, but he was cornered like a prey animal.
The monster bent over and towered over him. It pointed one of its long fingers, its yellow-born nails inches from Mike's face, "I want you." The monster said, its voice a low, crackly grumble. Mike trembled like a leaf; his wobbling elbows could barely hold him up. Nobody was coming to save him. Nobody even knew where he was.
One of the grotesque fingers slithered under Mike's chin, forcing his face forward, and Mike couldn't swallow the whimper, his stomach rolling and flipping. Eyes meeting, the monster grinned widely and toothily. Rotten breath fanned from brown teeth, and it said, “Out of my way.”
